What is a Position Size Calculator?

Use this free position size calculator to estimate how many shares may fit a predefined dollar or percentage risk limit. Position sizing connects account risk, entry price and stop-loss distance so one trade does not unintentionally consume too much capital.

Formula

Position size = Maximum dollar risk ÷ Risk per share

Example calculation

With a $25,000 account, 1% risk, a $100 entry and a $95 stop, maximum risk is $250, risk per share is $5 and estimated size is 50 shares.

How to use this tool responsibly

  • Define the stop before calculating size.
  • Use a consistent risk policy.
  • Leave room for slippage and fees.
